Careers in the Trades

What attracts someone to a career in the skilled trades? Perhaps it’s a chance to make a difference, the opportunity to be one’s own boss, or the hands-on learning. Or maybe it’s the number of career choices and opportunities, earned respect, job mobility, and good pay. Skilled trade occupations include automotive repair, carpenter, decorator, chef, florist, and electrician, to name just a few.

Jobs in the trades have changed over the years. There are fewer jobs that require physical strength and endurance. Skilled trades are not as dirty as they once may have been. The knowledge of computer software and mechanical systems is increasingly important. And virtually all trades require intelligence and creativity in addition to reading, math, and analytical skills. With a looming shortage of skilled trades people, employment opportunity is on the rise.
