FACES OF PENN FOSTER
“I worked twenty-six years in banking and then realized that banking was changing and my career was coming to an end. These changes forced once valued employees out the door who had worked many years to build decent retirement plans and accumulate numerous vacation days. Banking was all I could remember ever doing. I worked five more years in government while my husband finished seminary, but I knew this wasn’t for me. I knew if I was going to make a change, it would be a career in which I could be my own boss. This raised the question: “What would I enjoy doing every day until I retired?” My dream has always been to move to the Florida Keys and stay on the beach all day. Of course, that won’t pay the bills. Realizing this, I’ve always found joy in gardening, helping others decorate for special occasions, and directing weddings. So, I began to search out a new career. Most floral design schools were either out of state or extremely expensive. Then I found Penn Foster Career School, which would allow me to continue to work full-time, study at night, and it was affordable.”
“My husband Rev. Keith and family had moved to Belwood, N. C. in 2005. We loved the small town and living in the country. A couple invited our family to visit their local church just three doors up. They were inviting neighbors to Bible School and to our amazement were in need of a pastor. We were still commuting 30 minutes one way to our home church where Keith was the pastor. Six months later, God called Keith to this local church. We have always felt where a person lives is your mission field. What a blessing it is to live in the community where Keith pastors!”
“In November 2009, I began the study of Floral Design with Penn Foster. Six months later, an old 1946 store building across from our church became available, along with an unbelievable rent-to-own agreement. In May 2010, we began remodeling with the help of family and friends. On October 23rd, 2010, Donna Kay’s Bouquets held its Grand Opening. Since graduating from Penn Foster in December 2010, Donna Kay’s held the first Flower Day Camp for young girls & provided sponsors for those who couldn’t afford to attend.”
