Just like there are fashion trends, there are career trends. Both industries see their respective trends fade in and out over the years, mostly dependent on what new technology is developed the year before. And both the fashion and career worlds have some trends that stick so hard they become referred to as classic or timeless. A popular career trend in 2017 is the idea of “soft skills.” Over the last few months, we’ve written about what soft skills are and why hiring managers consider them necessary. But developing soft skills isn’t a new career trend; the idea was first brought up in 1972 in a report on leadership in the United States Army. That paper began to tentatively define what we would call soft skills: interpersonal and organizational skills that don’t rely on technical knowledge. So, basically, soft skills are a timeless classic and something we should all work to develop. Admittedly, there are many careers that don’t require developed interpersonal skills. The ability to interact and communicate with thousands of different people daily and adapt to last minute changes is integral to being successful in the position.
Home Health Aide
Outside of research or lab work, most professions in the healthcare field work directly with patients. As a Home Health Aide, soft skills are an absolute must. In this profession, you’ll develop close relationships with patients, especially those you care for in their own homes. Being able to be courteous, patient, and an attentive listener will make for a successful career in this field.
Like a Guest Service Agent, the manager of a hotel or a restaurant will be interacting with customers all of the time. Even more so, a manager needs to be able to clearly communicate to their team, as well as handle disputes and complaints from customers.
