SCRANTON, PA (May 1, 2013) - Penn Foster, a leader in career-focused online and blended education designed to address the skills gap in America, today announced the selection of Bradford Jones as the recipient of its Outstanding Graduate Award. The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a nationally recognized educational accrediting association, conducts an Outstanding Graduate Program every year in which each of its member institutions nominates one Outstanding Graduate.
“At Penn Foster, we look for students who think about their education in terms of their future career success,” said Joe Gagnon, President and COO of Penn Foster. “Bradford Jones exemplifies this philosophy. His work ethic and his ability to overcome obstacles make me confident that he will continue to shine both in and out of the classroom.”
Penn Foster selected Jones, a recent high school diploma recipient, from more than 90 student applicants. Students were judged based upon their academic achievement and their contributions to their chosen fields.
“I’m very honored to receive this award from Penn Foster and the DETC,” said Jones. “Penn Foster High School’s curriculum gave me the chance to complete my high school degree, while also allowing me to think long-term about my postsecondary education and my future career."
Penn Foster will host a special ceremony for Jones on May 1 at its Scranton headquarters. During the red carpet event, a representative from DETC will present Jones with his Outstanding Graduate Award. Following the ceremony, he will have the opportunity to tour the Penn Foster office, meet with the leadership team and learn more about Penn Foster’s rich history at the school’s Anthracite Heritage Museum exhibit.
For Jones, this recognition is a chance for him to reflect on moving forward from a troubled past. During a tough childhood that involved moving from foster home to foster home, Jones did not have the chance to get the education he deserved. He took his education into his own hands when he entered Penn Foster High School and graduated in August 2012.
Jones, a resident of Pine Hill, New Jersey, is now enrolled in Penn Foster’s Certified Personal Trainer program.
