PHILADELPHIA, PA (September 20, 2016) — Penn Foster Inc., a for-purpose organization providing skills development training, credentials and employment matching for today's frontline workforce, and JEVS Human Services, one of the Philadelphia region’s leading human service organizations, announced today a joint thought leadership roundtable for community leaders to discuss how partnerships between education solutions providers and workforce development programs can improve social and economic mobility of those in the community. The event takes place Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 9:00-10:30am at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Philadelphia.
JEVS and Penn Foster have partnered to support The Choice is Yours (TCY), an innovative program created by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Municipal Court and the Defender Association of Philadelphia to offer first-time, nonviolent felony drug offenders facing a one to two year prison sentence the opportunity to receive education and workforce training along with social services rather than go to prison. As a result, the first cohort of students enrolled in Penn Foster High School will graduate with their diploma, demonstrating the success of this partnership between a local nonprofit and a national educational institution.
JEVS Human Services COO John L. Colborn, and Penn Foster CEO Frank Britt will discuss the roles of innovative workforce development and educational opportunities as important components of a toolset that helps provide members of the community a means to succeed in life. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the impact of these trends on local efforts to improve social and economic mobility of community members.
“This event is a terrific opportunity not only to discuss how education and workforce development can work hand-in-hand to create even more effective solutions to incarceration, but also a means to continue dialogue with community leaders whose vision and direction are critical to solving societal issues,” said Penn Foster’s Britt. “And we couldn’t be more proud to demonstrate this success through the graduation celebration that will take place afterward.”
Immediately following the roundtable, the two organizations will celebrate the graduation of JEVS’ first The Choice Is Yours participants, who successfully earned their Penn Foster High School diploma, with a graduation ceremony and luncheon. Event attendees will have the opportunity to see the impact a blended learning high school solution can have on the community and can speak to the participants and family members.
“A high school diploma tops the list of credential attainment that defines opportunity and success in today’s workforce,” said Colborn from JEVS. “JEVS is excited to partner with Penn Foster in this unique relationship that not only opens the doors for first-time offenders to attain a diploma, but that also gives them the guidance and tools to help reshape their lives.”
