SCRANTON, PA (June 23, 2017) — Penn Foster, a leading career-focused education provider for today's evolving workforce., will honor its 2017 High School Diploma, Career Diploma, Associate’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree program graduates at its annual commencement ceremony, held this year on June 24 at 2:00pm EDT at the Peoples Security Bank Theatre at Lackawanna College. This year’s commencement will honor 250 graduates—some who have traveled from as far as South America for the event—and will be witnessed by 750 family members.
The 2017 commencement ceremony--Penn Foster’s largest ever--features a number of Penn Foster speakers and presenters. Greg Javer, Manager of Employee Development, will provide the welcome; Mark Slayton, Senior Vice President of Student Success, will make opening remarks; and Frank Britt, President and CEO, will deliver the commencement address. Javer and Slayton will confer the degrees; and Britt will present the DEAC 2017 Outstanding Graduate of the year Award to Omar Haughton.
Haughton was named to DEAC’s roster of Outstanding Graduates in 2017 following his being awarded Penn Foster’s 2016 Graduate of the Year. An Army veteran who sustained a traumatic brain injury while deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, he discovered Penn Foster College’s Criminal Justice program during rehabilitation and earned his associate’s degree in the program. After graduating, Haughton got a job with Passport to Learning, where he works as a forensic adaptive living skills instructor. He combines his criminal justice knowledge with his personal experience to help individuals in the court system with mild intellectual disabilities. Haughton is currently enrolled in his third Penn Foster program to earn his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
In addition, Penn Foster will acknowledge a very special graduate, Vicente Ferrer-Martinez, who at 83 will travel from Colombia, South America for the commencement. Mr. Ferrer-Martinez enrolled with International Correspondence Schools—Penn Foster’s previous name—in 1948 at the age of 14, studying at night while working 12-hour days. He finished his Commercial General Manager course in 1957 and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1958. Mr. Ferrer-Martinez has since founded a number of companies and currently serves as chairman of ARclad S. A., a company he founded in association with Adhesives Research Inc. in Glen Rock, PA.
“We couldn’t be more proud to honor our Penn Foster High School, Career School and College graduates of 2017,” said Britt “Many of these students have overcome some incredible odds and challenges to earn their diplomas and degrees, and many have made a huge effort to make it to Scranton to be recognized by their peers, their families and this community. We are excited to follow their paths of success.”
