Program Goal and Outcomes
Penn Foster's National Electrical Code® Certificate Program provides a comprehensive overview of the purpose, structure, and technical language of the 2014 National Electrical Code.
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Properly identify hot, grounded, and grounding conductors
- Define a branch circuit, describe the proper location and sizing of general-purpose receptacles and lighting in a single-family dwelling, and determine where GFCI or AFCI protection is required
- Understand the requirements for installing service conductors and equipment in various occupancies
- Define ampacity and apply the concept to the safe installation of equipment and outlets, including the importance of overcurrent protection; list the common overcurrent protection devices in use
- Understand the importance of the construction and installation of conductors and grounding systems to the integrity of an electrical system
- Using the Standard Method, determine demand loads and neutral loads in single and multiple residential units; explain the differences between using the Standard Method and Optional Method
- Differentiate between grounding and bonding and understand the importance of each to the application of the NEC. Correctly use the NEC to determine sizing for grounding electrodes and equipment grounding conductors for raceways and equipment.
- Use the NEC to select the proper wiring method and materials, including various wire types, for specific applications, to include uses permitted and uses not permitted.
- Use NEC Chapter 9 and Annex C to determine size conduit based on the size and number of conductors to be installed, or calculate the number of conductors allowed in a particular size of conduit or raceway.
- Use the NEC to determine minimum cover requirements for underground conductors, cables, and raceways, and proper securing and supporting of raceways and cables in ceiling and roof assemblies
- Define luminaire as it pertains to the NEC and determine proper locations and types for fixtures, lampholders, and grounding of luminaires
- Use the NEC to determine correct applications of flexible cords and cables for portable equipment; understand the requirements for installation, control, protection, and disconnection of appliances
- Identify standard and special-use receptacles and understand the applicable rules for new and replacement installations
- Use the NEC to determine guarding, ventilation, grounding, and location requirements for various types of transformers, including those in vaults; use the NEC to calculate OCPD sizes for transformers
- Define hazardous locations and the class, divisions, and groups used by the NEC to classify hazardous locations, and understand the application of various devices required for hazardous location installations
- Understand the specialized requirements that apply to other special locations, such as health care facilities and places of assembly
