Heather Geyer loves animals and wanted to work with them in a professional capacity. But she was needed on her family’s dairy farm and also had to maintain her job. Then she discovered she could earn her A.S. in Veterinary Technology through Penn Foster College without leaving home or her job.

Heather grew up on a dairy farm with a love for animals. During High School, she started working at a veterinary hospital, and knew that working with animals was what she wanted to do with her life. She wanted to become a veterinary technician. But quitting her job and moving to go to school wasn't an option.  She researched online schools and found the perfect fit; a college education at Penn Foster College.

“Without online education and Penn Foster College, I would not be where I am today.” ~ Heather Geyer

Heather earned her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology within 3 years. The online webinars were like being in class, but without leaving home. The instructors were willing to help and excited to see her succeed. With her devotion to the task and hard work, she was able to pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam the first time she took it. Heather is still working at the clinic where she started, Straley Veterinary Associates in Bellefonte, PA. Five years ago, she was cleaning cages and answering phones, but now she is head technician and office manager. As a Certified Veterinary Technician, Heather helps save animals on a daily basis. She is passionate about dental care for animals and client education. Her organization offers spay/neuter clinics to the community, and offers special arrangements for those who love their pets but can’t afford the care they need.

To recognize the achievements of those who study via distance education, the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) conducts an Outstanding Graduate program each year. The 2015 Outstanding Graduate Program marks the 32nd consecutive year DEAC has offered this program.
