There is more to think about than just cost and format; you want to make sure that the program you enroll in can help you meet your goals. What benefits does Penn Foster’s program offer?

Penn Foster’s Medical Coding Professional Career Diploma offers a flexible, online program with no deadlines for enrollment or scheduled class times. You are in control of when you study and don’t have to fit your schedule around class times. You have up to 18 months to complete all of your coursework, but the more time you can dedicate to studying, the quicker you can progress through the program and graduate.

Sixty-seven percent of current Penn Foster learners said they enrolled because they could complete their coursework at their own pace2, while 43% mentioned reduced pressure and greater access because of flexible coursework.2

Besides being flexible, the program is designed to help students prepare for certification. The classes are aligned to the American Academy of Professional Coders’ (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam and include the AAPC’s Practicode Course, which can allow you to be considered fully certified once you pass your exam. We also cover the cost of up to two attempts at the CPC exam, as well as a one-year student membership to AAPC.

All of the materials needed for your classes are included in tuition, and you can choose to pay in full, which gives you a discount off the total cost of the program, or choose a monthly payment plan with payments as low as $69 per month.

If you have a busy schedule or need more flexibility, Penn Foster’s program allows you to choose where and when you study. It is very independent, so having strong time management skills and an ability to keep yourself motivated is important to success. Support is still available from instructors and staff, but they don't do proactive outreach; you need to email or schedule an appointment to get one-on-one time to ask questions.

Our Medical Coding Professional Career Diploma aligns to the AAPC CPC exam, includes the Practicode course and a one-year AAPC membership, and covers up to two exam attempts. Payment plans start at $69 a month. See what's included.

Where benefits does Medcerts’ program offer?

The MedCerts program can be completed on a shorter timeline, and learners are expected to finish in about 22 weeks. While it is one of the more expensive programs, the cost of taking a certification exam is covered.

Where MedCerts really stands out is the instructor guidance. Students enrolled in MedCerts’ Professional Coder training have instructor-led video lessons, so an expert in the field covers the material versus you just doing reading and assignments. You also get access to their Career Center and Career Coaches for up to one year after you complete the program to get advice and help taking the next step in your career.

However, though still online and offering some flexibility, there are minimum study time expectations. Students in the program are expected to log 15 to 20 hours of study time per week to meet their goals. While you can still login and complete coursework on a flexible schedule, if you don’t meet your weekly progress goals, student services may reach out to work with you to get you back on track. If you are severely behind where you’re expected to be, you may be placed on academic probation.

With MedCerts, you have a structured program and career support, with the expectation that you'll complete everything in about four months.

What benefits does Preppy’s program offer?

Preppy’s biggest draw for the Medical Billing and Coding training is career support students are offered and the overall affordability.

As part of the program, students can receive guidance from a working medical biller and coder, giving them real-world advice from someone who’s been where they are now. Students can also choose between completing an externship for hands-on experience with placement support from Preppy or jump right into the workforce with job opportunity support from career services.

Preppy is, overall, one of the more affordable programs, but monthly payments are high at $349 per month. The program also doesn’t cover the cost of any certification exams, so that is on the student. Despite that, this can be a great program for someone who still wants something online and self-paced but wants help finding an externship or job after completion.

What benefits does U.S. Career Institute’s program offer?

The U.S. Career Institute's Medical Coding Certificate Program is online and self-paced, with no weekly minimum study time requirements. It's also relatively affordable, with $79 monthly payments. Where it really stands out is access to tutoring, resume and job interview support, and one-on-one career coaching.

The cost of the CPC-A exam is reimbursed to the student when they submit a receipt for the cost from the AAPC, successfully completed their courses, and paid their tuition in full. AAPC membership, which is required to take the exam, is not included in tuition costs or reimbursed.

U.S. Career Institute is very flexible and offers dedicated support and tutoring.

What benefits does the AAPC program offer?

The AAPC's Medical Coding CPC Job-Ready program is by far the most expensive on the list at $4,699 (with monthly payments of $199), but it also includes a lot of benefits. The cost includes your 32-week training, one-year AAPC membership, resume writing and interview coaching, internship placement, and unlimited attempts at the CPC exam. Students also are considered fully CPC certified when they pass the exam, since the program also includes the AAPC Practicode course.

However, the program works on a structured schedule, and students must attend virtual, instructor-led classes. They're also expected to interact within the classroom. This format may not work as well for someone who has a changing work schedule or responsibilities that require more flexibility.

Someone who doesn't mind a very structured schedule and learning format could do well in this program!

The bottom line

Deciding which program is the right fit isn't just about which is "better." Each program has benefits, but it's really figuring out exactly what you are looking for. Before evaluating your options, figure out things like

  • Your budget. How much can you reasonably afford per month?
  • Your schedule. Are you able to commit to regular study days and class times?
  • Your end goal. Is certification important to you? Should it be included in your program?

With those thoughts in mind, you can narrow down which online program is going to work best for you.
