What to Expect in the High School HVAC Elective Pathway

Enrollment in this program will find you taking the high school courses you’d expect: math, science, English. What makes this program unique is the opportunity to explore an HVAC career and develop foundational HVAC knowledge while working toward graduation.

Your first two electives will be completely focused on HVAC to help prepare you for certification and explore careers in the field. Your last three electives are open for whatever courses may interest you.

This program consists of 21 credits: 16 core courses and 5 elective courses. You must earn all 21 credits in order to graduate.³

Your 16 core courses are what you’d typically expect from a high school program:
- Math
- Science
- English
- Social Studies
For your electives, the first 2 will be focused entirely on HVAC. For your last 3, you can choose from our list of academic or general electives.
If you are interested in pursuing post-secondary education within your state, you should check with your state to understand the requirements. States may impose certain requirements. For example, an online High School diploma may not be recognized by some colleges and universities within your state to receive financial aid. We recommend you check with the institution for any specific restrictions. If you are under the age of 18 and reside in Tennessee, you may be assessed using a nationally standardized achievement test in ELA and mathematics. Additionally, if you reside in Tennessee, you will be required to complete 22 credits to graduate, with a minimum of four (4) credits each in ELA and mathematics and three (3) credits each in science and social studies.

Licensing and/or certification requirements for jobs in this field are not the same in every state and may include educational, testing, and/or experiential requirements beyond those offered in the Penn Foster Program. Prospective students should contact the state professional licensing board or similar regulatory body in the state(s) where they plan to work to determine their requirements before enrolling in this program. The HVAC Elective Pathway is an elective option within the Penn Foster High School Diploma Program. The main difference is in your elective coursework. If you are looking to explore careers in the HVAC field after high school, the Penn Foster High School with HVAC Program can help you begin preparing while still in high school. In this program, you’ll prepare to take the EPA 608 certification exam, which is required for certain HVAC roles, and can then continue exploring HVAC career pathways. The cost of taking the EPA exam is covered as part of the program.

The standard Penn Foster High School Diploma Program is not concentrated in any one career, so is a great option if you’re interested in a different career path post-graduation or even if you’re unsure what you want to do with your future.
