Instructor BS Computer Science – Dalhouise University
Mariam Dawoud High School Instructor

Mariam has earned Bachelor of Computer Science from Dalhousie University in Canada. She then earned an Oracle Database Management Associate degree from Oracle Enterprise.

In 2007, she decided to switch her career to teaching math. She went to Alvernia University in Reading, PA and earned her teacher certificate in 2009.

Her future career plans are to earn a master's degree in education, and probably add on another teaching certificate in computer science.

She's a mother of three beautiful boys 4, 4, and 7 months. In her leisure time, she likes to paint, and read. She's a great cook too!

What is your proudest teaching moment?
I was very proud when a senior math teacher came up to me and said how much she thought I am a good educator and classroom manager. At the time, I was a long-term math substitute teacher for grades 9 and 10 at one of the urban schools in Reading, PA. The class I took over was known for trouble. Most teachers thought that I had long experience running classrooms, but in fact that was my first long-term teaching experience.

What is one piece of advice you'd like to give students?
Don't give up! Keep trying till achieve what you want to accomplish. Be realistic but, at the same time, optimistic and a hard worker. You'll get there.

What are some of your passions?
Educations is a major passion in my life. I believe that everyone is able to learn something that are able to use to improve his/her life.

My other passion is painting. I connect with colors and details. I color with water-based colors. One of my goals is to open my Etsy store and sell my production.

What is your most memorable experience as a student?
As a student, believe it or not, I hated math. I scored ok in exams but it didn't appeal to me at all. One college professor changed the way I thought about math. She was organized when giving lectures. She made numbers and theorems make sense. Since that time, I discovered that math is what I wanted to teach.

What are some of your personal or professional goals?
Currently, I am working on earning my Masters degree in Urban Education. Almost done.

I am interested in teaching urban student population, English learners, and adult learners. Any further studies that will allow me to profess in these areas, will be part of my professional goal.

One of my personal goals is to take care of myself so that I am able to be around when my little boys grow up and need my advice or assistance. The moment I will realize that I have fulfilled my mission as a mother and educator is when my boys grow up to be successful, well-rounded, and independent men.

What is your greatest strength?
I work hard for what I want. I am a good learner and a good teacher.
